Transition Durham’s Housing and Buildings Vision is to

  • Create opportunities to learn about sustainable housing and living
  • Encourage creative re-use of existing buildings and land
  • Provide affordable energy for residents
  • Build sustainable housing developments as educational and demonstrational centres
  • Provide viable evidence in favour of alternative housing strategies
  • Encourage residents to self-design and self-manage projects in order to build community
  • Create permanently affordable housing under co-operative/community ownership structures
  • Implement more mixed-use developments, which integrate housing, retail and industry
  • Design with flexible re-use in mind
  • Enhance community resilience by encouraging developments to have a diversity of residents (different skills/interests)
  • Minimise resource use and environmental impacts over the entire lifecycle of a building (for existing and new build)
  • Design developments with good access to public transport links and cycle routes
